Description
Soft, chewy, and sweet homemade cinnamon sugar bagels that are easy to make with simple pantry staples. Perfect for brunch, snacks, or a quick breakfast treat.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups bread flour
- 1 cup warm water (110°F/43°C)
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast or quick-rise yeast
- 2 tablespoons granulated white sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar (for topping)
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (for topping)
- 1 tablespoon melted butter or coconut oil (for topping)
- 6 cups water (for boiling)
- 1 tablespoon baking soda (for boiling)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Add melted butter and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually add bread flour, one cup at a time, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 30-45 minutes until doubled in size.
- Punch down dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Roll into balls and poke a 1.5-inch hole in the center of each.
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add baking soda. Carefully drop 2-3 bagels into the water and boil for 1 minute on each side.
- Remove bagels with a slotted spoon and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Mix cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl. Brush the top of each warm bagel with melted butter and immediately sprinkle generously with the cinnamon sugar mixture.
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake bagels for 15-18 minutes until golden brown, rotating the pan halfway through.
- Let bagels cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
If your dough is sticky, add flour one tablespoon at a time. Do not over-flour. The boiling step is crucial for the chewy texture. For a dairy-free option, swap butter for coconut oil. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage.
