Description
A delicious party appetizer that wraps seasoned smoked sausage snacks in crispy egg roll wrappers with cream cheese and cheddar, fried or air-fried to golden perfection.
Ingredients
Scale
- 12 to 16 Texas Twinkies (smoked sausage snacks, approx. 1 lb)
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1 package egg roll wrappers (approx. 20 wrappers)
- 1/4 cup BBQ sauce, divided
- 1/2 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 2 stalks green onions, finely chopped
- 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
- Vegetable or canola oil for frying or air frying
Instructions
- Crumble the Texas Twinkies into a large bowl. If large, chop in half first. Add softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, chopped green onions, and 2 tablespoons of BBQ sauce. Mix until a cohesive, sticky mixture forms.
- Lay out egg roll wrappers on a clean surface and keep covered with a damp paper towel to prevent drying. Mix the egg and water in a small bowl for the wash.
- Place one wrapper like a diamond. Spoon 2-3 tablespoons of filling into the center. Fold the bottom corner up, fold in left and right corners, and roll tightly toward the top. Brush the top corner with egg wash and finish rolling. Place seam-side down.
- Heat oil in a Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C). Fry egg rolls in batches for 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy. Drain on a wire rack.
- Alternatively, preheat air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Place egg rolls in basket, spray lightly with oil, and cook for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- Let egg rolls rest for 1-2 minutes before serving warm with extra BBQ sauce for dipping.
Notes
Ensure cream cheese is fully softened to avoid lumps. Do not overfill the wrappers to prevent bursting. Drain fried egg rolls on a wire rack, not paper towels, to maintain crispness. Can be frozen uncooked and cooked from frozen.
